This may be a question you find yourself asking, in the modern world of billboards, social media, and evangelistic outreaches. I’m sure you aren’t alone because seeing a “Jesus saves” or a “God Loves you” sign can leave you asking many questions. It’s one thing to read the sign but another to understand what that truly means. We have people from all walks of life around us every day; some may have grown up in a Christian family and know Jesus, and others who haven’t may have questions like: what does this mean? Who is that man called Jesus? and why is he important?
If you start asking Christians why Jesus is important, you will get many different answers based on perspective, personal experience, and knowledge of the Bible. Scripture is always the best reference to get answers to your questions. I am writing this from the salvation perspective. Please understand there is so much more to learn about Jesus; I will only scratch the tip of the iceberg.
From the beginning of mankind, humans have been cursed because Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. God told them they could eat everything but the fruit from that tree, and if they ate from it, they would surely die. So through Adam, all mankind is cursed, under sin. We all need a savior, someone to reconcile us back to God, and that is exactly what Jesus did for us. He lived a sinless life by the law of Moses, which made him worthy to be a sacrifice for our transgressions. The law of Moses gives the requirements for sacrifices, and Jesus fulfills them all. He died on the cross for our sins so that we could obtain salvation through his name, and three days later, he was raised from the dead to bring us justification. Through him, we have peace with God and are no longer under the bondage of sin. When Jesus ascended into Heaven after his resurrection, he said he would not leave us comfortless. To fulfill that promise, he sent the Holy Spirit upon all those born again through faith and belief in Jesus Christ. Upon our death here in this life, the Bible proclaims that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead will quicken our mortal bodies; this means that Jesus died in the flesh and so will we, but when Jesus resurrected, he resurrected for eternity and the life that is in him, is in us if we are born again. We shall be raised for eternity just as Jesus was. Jesus is our mediator with God, and we come to God with Jesus’ righteousness, not our own, because we have no righteousness except through him. Jesus is the door; if we come to God, it has to be through him. There is no other door, and there is no other name by which we must be saved. Jesus is the only hope that mankind has to get to Heaven. All of this was God’s plan from the beginning of creation. When a human rejects the salvation that God has provided through the death and resurrection of his son, there is no hope for that person, but they, just as Satan, shall be cast out of the presence of God for all of eternity.
God has made a way for you to be free from sin and your past and to have a new life in Jesus Christ, and that is why Jesus is important to you today and for eternity. Please search the scriptures and see that you are only saved through faith in Jesus. He invites you to come, and he loves you with unconditional love. God has made a way for you to come to him through Jesus. Won’t you come?
